In her editorial, Ms. Stabler discusses how its kind of ridiculous that highly selective colleges like the Ivy League colleges search for students with singular passions. She sarcastically writes how so many parents like herself werent thinking clearly when they let their children engage in a lot of different activities so they could discover themselves better and just try out things in their childhood and teenage years. Instead, she sarcastically writes, she should have been encouraging them to do only one activity an to hone in on that activity as their passion. Ms. Stabler is making reference to the fact that highly selective colleges do not seek out well-rounded students but instead search for exceptionally talented individuals in a specific passion area to together form a well-rounded class of talented students. She writes about how there really arent any kids who have this singular interest (wrong!) and how her daughter certainly doesnt. But then she mentions her son and how he does have this sort of singular interest (although he forgets his lunch and would essentially lose his head if it were not screwed on). His study used pre existing data from a National Opinion Survey on Crime and Justice (NOSES) which was a quantitative study conducted through the use of surveys. Doodler’s results tell us that consistent with cultivation theory, crime show viewing influences attitudes towards guns and gun control. Viewers are more likely to disagree with gun control and agree that being ar med is the best defense against criminals (Doodler, 2002). A study, â€Å"Defining Who You Are By What You’re Not: Organizational Desertification and The National Rifle Association† by Kimberly D. Eyelash and C. B. Patriarchy explores the concept of organizational desertification through a qualitative investigation of cognitive relationships with the National Rifle Association. Their findings suggest that organizational desertification s a self-perception based upon a cognitive separation between ones identity and the organizations identity (Eyelash, Patriarchy, 2001). The researchers chose the NORA because of its notoriety in the media and the sample of part icipants would have familiarity with the NORA. This study provides insight into the understanding of how people define who they are by what you are not (Eyelash, K. D. ). One portion of their study was a large scale survey of public attitudes about the NORA. In their findings † desertification is also partially explained by the degree to which respondents agreed that personal experiences had affected their perceptions of the NORA. † (Eyelash, K. D. ). A portion of the findings have told us that personal experiences from the respondents have influenced their perception. Patricia Howard completed a qualitative study to determine what parents’ beliefs about children and gun safety. Howard accomplished the study by sending out surveys to 230 parents of children in elementary school. They received 82 returned surveys . This was a low percentage of about firearm storage in the home; (2) Examine parents’ primary belief about firearm safety programs for children: and (3) explore the parents’ perception about their child’s behavior around guns (Howard, 2005). What is of most interest for this study is the third part of the study? Howard finding say that parental perception about their child’s behavior around guns support the fact that their child would not touch a gun unless an adult was present (Howard, 2005). All of these studies have looked into the perception of guns and gun control. They have all provided valuable information. They all come to a conclusion that there are many aspects that impact society’s perception of safety in regards to gun control laws. But what is missing is the understanding of why and how gun control laws impact the perception of safety in society. Approach This research is a phenomenology study on how gun control laws impact the percep tion of safety upon society. A phenomenology study is described as basic lived experience. A strength derived from this approach is you are able to gain insight by learning of the participants experience related to the proposed research question. A nakedness is that the research conducted is based on the opinions of the participants. Although this may seem irrelevant but in fact it makes it difficult to analyze the data. For this study, this approach fits as it goes into a subject matter that is based in life experience. The question naturally lends itself to a phenomenological study. It asks for the perception of safety, which in turn is part of our life experience. Methodology The study will consist of interviews with approximately 1 5 participants. The participants would be adults between the ages of 21 to 70. The participants could include prior and active military service, law enforcement, and the civilian population. All of the participants will be asked to sign an informed co nsent agreement and will be provided a disclosure form with all of the details for this study. A participant can, at any time removed themselves from the study. The interviews require only subjective opinions and answers from the sample of participants. The interviews would be recorded both visually and audibly. In addition the interviewer should keep notes as the interview progresses. The notes from the interviewer needs to be bracketed and will be treated as such. The audio video tapes will be collected and transcribed. These recording will be kept in a locked cabinet and all data on computers will be encrypted . The following is a list of questions that will be asked of the participants during their interviews. 1 . Results and Conclusion After conducting multiple interviews the findings from my research do in fact say that gun controls laws have an impact on the perception of safety in society. When analyzing the data collected, it was found that those interviewed felt that gun control laws had a negative effect upon their perception of safety. A common statement was that the laws help to discourage responsible, law abiding citizens from owning firearms, thus meaning that criminals are more likely to feel secure in the knowledge that their victims are unarmed. In addition the government’s ever growing control over the ability of citizens to own firearms weakens the rest of our freedoms. The findings tell us that society doesn’t perceive they are safer as a result of gun control laws. Further research would be needed to determine how safety is defined in the eyes of society. Also one would need to further explore what factors are influencing society perception. The study has provided additional insight in to the perception of safety, and provides addition directions for further research. No one cared, because everyone else was reaching for IT, too. So, she had to switch races. MY LIFE CHANGING DECISION ROSS BROWN ENGL 1301-270 SUSAN ROBBINS 4/2/2013 It was the beginning of spring about two years ago- a wet and gloomy day. I was thirty two years old, strung out on meth and homeless. Headed back to prison for the third time, I was faced with a life changing decision, â€Å"do I turn myself in† or â€Å"do I keep running and take my chances†. It was a decision that would affect the ones I love the most, my children. As I sat in the woods behind a run down, drug infested motel, I closed my eyes and all I could see were the tears in my kids eyes every time they came to see me in prison.The ones that depended on me for love and security, were now sad and scared of me. They were as lost as I was. Thoughts began to run through my head, â€Å"have I failed my children as a father†, â€Å"do I want them to go down the same path I went down† or â€Å"do I want to give them a future and a father to be proud of†. Living the life style I lived for ten years, taught me not to trust people. Especially authority figures. So the thought of turning myself in didn’t sound like a good idea to me at the time. It left me puzzled and scared.I could keep running, but the past ten years had been nothing but a continoues cycle that always landed me back in prison and left my children without a father. I’ve always been known for taking chances. Turning myself in would require taking the biggest chance of my life, trusting an authority figure and the system that I thought had already failed me. My Pastor had always told me â€Å"recovery has to start somewhere son†. At that moment, with my children in mind, I had made my decision. I was going to turn myself in.As I opened my eyes, tears streaming down my face, the day seemed to turn from wet and gloomy, to calm and clear. I picked up my phone and made the call. I was to turn myself in to the authorities within two weeks. On April 20,2011 I walked into the F ederal Halfway House. I was tired, physically and mentally. I did not know what to expect or what was expected of me. They gave me three meals a day and a hard mat to sleep on. They provided transportation and the opportunity to become stable, if you wanted it. I wanted it bad! It would require a lot of effort and determination to make it through the system successfully.Not many ex felons make it. They looked at me as another statistic when I first arrived. You only have a certain amount of time to get a job and start your recovery. I struggled, nobody wanted to hire a recovering ex con. I was starting to think I was not going to make it. I was at the end of the dead line, they were wanting go ahead and send me back to prison. On the very last day the phone rang, it was Bill Orr with Gym Bleacher Boards. He asked me to come in right away for an interview. I had to get permission from the job coordinator in order for that to happen.He was not wanting to give me this last chance at ge tting a job. Then out of nowhere my case worker, Ms. Woodson, showed up and said â€Å" just give him this one last chance before you send him back†. When I arrived at Gym Bleacher Boards, I was nervous and had mixed emotions about everything. As I sat there waiting on my interview with Bill, I said a little prayer to myself, â€Å" Lord, please let me get this job, not for me, but for my children†. Then he looked over at me and said, â€Å" Ross, everybody deserves a second chance at life, you are hired†. Within two months I was able to get my own place and out of the Federal Halfway House. Now, two years later I got my family back, a good job, and a set of nine month old twin daughters. As I look back on the day I made my decision, I realize I took a chance that changed my life. 1. RESEARCH TOPIC Agricultural Education and Training on crop producing rural subsistence farmers in the area of KwaMadundube (Stanger, Kwa-Zulu Natal). 2. BACKGROUND The rapid growth of agricultural education and training began during the late 19th century in the United States of America (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agricultural_extension). Since the establishment of the democratic South African government in 1994, visionary policies and programs, strategies and Agricultural education and training governance structures have been established (Didiza, 2005). In 2005 (DoA, 2005), the national agricultural education and training strategy was launched with the aim to address the needs of the country’s economy and improvement of agricultural production through quality Agricultural Education and Training. The area of KwaMadundube is located in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Before April 2013, the area of KwaMadundube was not under Municipality (Nhaca and Ngobese, KwaDukuza Municipality-Corporate communications Department). There was no development in any way. It was owned by families who paid money for it. The receipts they received when they bought the land served as certificates so that they could enjoy the privileges enjoyed by white people and served as a right to own the land. These families were forced to change their surnames e.g. Mhlongo became Champion and Khuzwayo became Forbay; so that they would own the land freely as it was during the apartheid era that they bought the
